Considers the motivations behind these movements and their relationship to social and technological changes and to the traditions of art history. Augments investigation of paintings, sculpture, and architecture with letters, journals, and poetry by artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Louis Kahn, Jackson Pollock, and Audrey Flack.
