A two semester course, required for all physics majors, focused primarily on revolutionary post- 1900 physical theories and their application to understanding the nature of space, time, matter, and energy. Topics include special relativity, thermodynamics, the failure of classical physics (as illustrated by the photoelectric effect and the double slit experiment), the dual wave-particle nature of light and matter, the wave function and its interpretation, the Schr?dinger equation and its solutions for selected bound and unbound problems, and the physics of solids, molecules, atoms, nuclei, and elementary particles. Prerequisites: PY 212A, MA 118A.
