This course is an introduction to the chemistry of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere, including natural processes and the effects of civilization on the environment. Specific topics include air pollution, acid precipitation, global warming, decomposition of organic matter by geochemical and microbial processes, regulation and enforcement of environmental regulations, wastewater treatment, and toxicity. Prerequisite: CH 112A, or CH 125A. Three lectures per week.
