Modern concepts of atomic structure and chemical bonding are emphasized. Topics include structure and bonding, the solid state, special topics (solution chemistry, acid-bases, hydrides, noble gas compounds, etc.), crystal field theory, inorganic spectroscopy, and nuclear chemistry. Visible spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements are introduced. The laboratory offers experiments to supplement the lecture material. Prerequisite: CH 112A or CH 125A. Offered every fall semester. Three lectures and one laboratory per week.
