For all students interested in a one-semester survey of organic chemistry focusing on the core concepts of organic chemistry. Topics include the structure and bonding, nomenclature and type of reactions for alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The chemical reactions of functional groups and substituted hydrocarbons such as alkyl halides, alcohols, phenols, ethers, amines; carbonyls: aldehydes, ketones; carboxylic acids, esters, amides will be covered as well as stereo-chemical principles. This course may not substitute for CH 221A and is not open to anyone who has completed CH 222A. Prerequisite: CH 112A or CH 125A. Offered every spring semester. Three lectures and one laboratory per week.
