This course is a survey of criminal law, including sources, classification, definitions, elements, defenses and culpability. It will cover the history and development of criminal law and will differentiate between substantive, procedural, civil and administrative law. The course will focus on the various crimes that are particularly applicable to the law enforcement officer, including murder, rape, narcotics, illegal firearms and Internet related crimes. Special emphasis will be placed on gang related offenses, weapon and narcotic trafficking, sexual assault, Internet child predators and white collar crime. The course will also underscore the procedures associated with the judicial process, including criminal procedure and court jurisdiction on the federal and state levels. Three hours a week.
