This course examines how politics and economics come together in international relations and global problems. It explores why nations trade with each other and why they sometimes practice trade protectionism. It also probes the growing importance of regional economic blocks, such as the European Union and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Other topics include the rise and decline of American economic hegemony, the rise of Japan’s economic power, and global trade conflicts. The course also surveys economic reforms in the former Soviet Union and China as well as causes of underdevelopment in the developing world. Prerequisite: PL 102A or consent of the instructor. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
