The major areas to be considered in this course will include: how children learn mathematics, teaching mathematics with a variety of manipulatives, the role of problem solving and critical thinking in the elementary mathematics curriculum, the sequential development of mathematics skills for computation in the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, geometry and measurement, an understanding of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards (NCTM), and the role of calculators and computers in the elementary school. Three hours a week.
