A course designed to teach the student the basic techniques of writing music-including aspects of structure, instrumental usage, handling of different textures and compositional principles. Intensive creative work, often leading to readings of this music and a final work in performance will lead the student to both technical and musical self expression. Prerequisite: FA 231A or permission of the instructor. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
