Classical Japan (Nara and Heian periods): institutions, social life, culture. Medieval Japan: rise of the Bushi, new forms of Buddhism, social and cultural developments. Early modern Japan: wars of unification, Tokugawa period. Meiji Restoration and its consequences. The modernization of Japan: industrialization, imperialism, cultural changes, the Pacific War. Japan since 1945.
