This course is designed for students to become familiar with literacy skills, i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course presents a range of topics in language arts such as theories of language acquisition, characteristics of emerging speech, preverbal communication, growth milestones, and ages and stages of language development. Also emphasized are the issues and strategies surrounding differences in language achievement and the use of individualized strategies to meet the needs of all children. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills and design materials to promote literacy, i.e., developmentally appropriate books, felt boards, puppets, storytelling, and poems.
