I3 credits Open to all students. Required course for all art majors. This course provides a global view of major epochs of human experience and major events of historical and cultural significance from the Stone Age through Ancient Near East Classical Antiquity, Africa, Asia, and other cultural areas, to the Renaissance period in Europe. Works of art examined in context offer insight into ways that people in different times and places have explored their relationships with other human beings and with nature, and have defined meaning and value in existence. Links will be made between the events and character of the periods discussed and our time, establishing a historical foundation for understanding the rise of modernism and the modern world.
