Post-modern societies play with many distorted images of “the savage” (noble or brutal), barbarians, primitives, heathens, and similar fantasies of “otherness” in public art, fashion, discourse, politics, and religion. At the same time the contacts between post-modern peoples and actual primitive peoples have become everyday and often brutal occurrences. This course will examine both aspects of this rope—how western societies fantasize about the primitive, and what anthropology can tell us about the lives, cultures, and circumstances of actual primitive peopl
