Prerequisite: Admission to the Practical Nursing Program. Corequisites: NURP 105 and 110. This course is designed to assist beginning practical nursing students in acquiring a foundation of basic nursing theory and developing clinical skills, which will insure provision of safe, effective nursing care. An overview of basic legal and ethical aspects of nursing is presented. The nursing process as the tool to organize and deliver care is introduced. Fundamental skills and knowledge used in basic nursing assessment and care related to infection prevention and control, safety, immobility, ambulation, comfort, sleep, normal nutrition, elimination, oxygenation, circulation, fluid and chemical balance, skin and wound care, medication administration, and communication are covered. Focus is on helping patients adapt to basic stressors, as well as on health promotion. The college laboratory is utilized to assist students in acquiring basic skills. 3 lecture hours, 6 college laboratory hours.
