Special attention is given to the rise, decline, and legacy of mainstream Protestant culture, religious pluralism in the 20th century, the religious origins of social and cultural change, the continuing importance of civil religion, and the implications of the First Amendment for religious expression in America. Prereq: HIST 101 or HIST 102, or consent of instructor.
