Surveys medical traditions of the West beginning with the end of the scientific revolution and the enlightenment and ending with the start of the twenty-first century. Explores conflicts which arose within society and medical practices as the professionalization of medicine developed. Examines how societal changes influenced content and delivery of medical care and how the medical profession’s view of disease and wellness have influenced modern society. The roles of women and the underprivileged will be a chief concept. Spring semester, odd-numbered years. Counts toward the Western Cultures requirement of the Liberal Arts Core. 3 credits.
