The study of the underlying theory necessary to understand the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Focuses on mathematical models of the earth, the earth’s gravity field, and the use of nearearth satellites to measure the earth’s surface. Important concepts developed in this course include coordinate systems, datums, map projections, coordinate transformations, and GPS network design.
