A detailed study of the novela, or novella, genre in 17th-century Spain, including selected novelas ejemplares by Cervantes and selected novelas amorosas and desenganos amorosos by María de Zayas. The course considers the problem of exemplarity, the representation of transgression or deviancy, literary tradition, and sociohistorical context in these works. Prerequisites: Span 307D and Span 308D and at least two 300-level literature courses taught in Spanish. One-hour preceptorial for undergraduates; in Spanish.
