A detailed study of the novela, or novella, genre in 17th-century Spain, including selected novelas ejemplares by Cervantes and selected novelas amorosas and desenganos amorosos by MarĂ­a de Zayas. The course considers the problem of exemplarity, the representation of transgression or deviancy, literary tradition, and sociohistorical context in these works. Prerequisites: Span 307D and Span 308D and at least two 300-level literature courses taught in Spanish. One-hour preceptorial for undergraduates; in Spanish.
