This course surveys the period from ca. 3500 bce to 1650 ce in the West. As we examine the civilizations of Mesopotamia, the ancient Mediterranean, and medieval and early modern Europe, we focus on themes of cultural contact, conflict, and change in order to understand the complex roots of conventional "Western" history.
