This course is a survey of Jewish communities in the Islamic world; their social, cultural, and intellectual life from the 7th to the 19th century ce. Topics include: Muhammad and the Jews; the legal status of Jews under Islam; the spread of Rabbinic Judaism in the Islamic Empire; the development of new Jewish identities under Islam (Karaites); Jewish traders and scholars in Medieval Egypt; the flourishing of Jewish civilization in Muslim Spain; and Sephardi (Spanish) Jews in the Ottoman Empire.
