A study of the science of instrumentation and the art of orchestration. In-class performances of student compositions aid in the understanding of instrumental capabilities and limitations. Analysis of orchestral scores by Ravel, Stravinsky, et al. provides insight into efficient and creative use of the orchestra. In addition, scoring for both vocal and chamber ensembles is covered. Prerequisite: Music 103E or permission of instructor.
