Sociology

Description:
-
Course begins with a review of the sociological literature on the professions. It will then focus on the medical, legal, and business/managerial professions as case studies of the development of professions in post-industrial society. Intrinsic to the definition of profession is "autonomy." The course will explore what is happening to professions and professional autonomy in highly bureaucratized and corporatized societies, where we speak of deprofessionalization and proletarianization of professions.
