The subject of this course is the history of the modern Middle East from the 17th century up to the present. The course will address political, social, and cultural history within the framework of an Islamic civilization and examine modern concerns such as nationalism, colonialism, statehhod and impart of outside powers, and the response of the people of the Middle East to this challenge.
