Description:
-
The first of the four-semester sequence of intensive theoretical study required of all music majors. NOT an entry-level course: Students enrolled in this class should be literate musicians with considerable prior experience performing/reading music. Specific topics include review of basic principles of notation, major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, triadic harmony, figured bass, melody and two-voice counterpoint, fundamentals of diatonic harmony, and part writing in two, three, and four voices. Course work includes lecture-discussion of chapters, assigned workbook pages, frequent chapter tests, sight singing practice, and weekly computer assignments in ear training. It is strongly recommended that non-pianists concurrently study class piano.
