Students will exhibit an understanding of the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas, and discuss the period of interaction with Europeans (British, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and Russians) that accompanied the Age of Exploration. Beginning with the American and Haitian revolutions, the course will describe the creation of new governments in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Trans-Atlantic commerce and the slave trade will also be covered in this class.
