This course surveys the religious beliefs and practices of the Mesopotamians, Canaanites, Egyptians, Hittites, and Persians. The specific themes of Mother Goddess cult, cosmogony, and the problem of good and evil play central roles in the focus of the course. Special attention will also be given the place and function of myth and ritual in ancient Near Eastern religious systems. Prerequisites: Instructor's approval.
