Comprehension of theoretical principles underlying 20th century musical composition including advanced rootless quartal chords of jazz; devices of impressionism shown with influence of the music of Bali; advanced techniques of atonal music and serial music; algorithms and computer programs for analysis of 12 tone music; rhythmic devices of Hindustan India and central Africa; modal music of jazz and 20th century music; octatonic scales of Bartok as well as other artificial scales; prepared piano music of John Cage and aleatoric principles of the middle century; minimalist principles of the late 20th century; practical compositional skills of 20th century part writing; analytical skills of 20th century musical masterworks; music of other cultures.
