Introduction to Swahili. Development of basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills emphasizing a communicative approach. Conversation on everyday topics. Reading texts based on Swahili culture. Students will acquire a minimum core vocabulary of about 600 words and mastery of the following basic structures: Swahili noun class system; associative -a; present affirmative and negative tenses; the imperative; emphatic pronouns; ni and si expressions; yes and no questions; question words; noun/adjective agreement; possessive adjectives; monosyllabic verbs; reciprocal and prepositional verbs.
