Prerequisites: Honors standing or permission of university Honors Program. This course will examine different conceptions of nature, and different theories about the relationship of humans to their natural environment, that have shaped current debates about environmental issues. Readings will be drawn from historically important moral theories as well as from contemporary philosophical writings in the area of environmental ethics and works of literature. Questions addressed will include: What are rights? Who/what should have them? What kinds of things, if any, are intrinsically valuable? What responsibilities do we have to future generations?
