The course gives a current picture of the German-speaking countries of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, stressing the period since 1945 and most recent developments since the reunification of East and West Germany. Topical emphasis may change each time it is offered. Topics include politics, the social and economic situation, education, women's questions, culture and literature, film and other media. It may be repeated with change of topic. The course is regularly offered in conjunction with the university's Germany Abroad Program.
