Prerequisite: ANT 153 or ANT 353 or permission of the instructor. Seminar-style class devoted to advanced comparative study of African cultures with specific attention to culture change in the areas of social organization, kinship, economics, ways of knowing, religions, art, music, gender roles, political systems, power and representation. Students conduct individual and group research projects on how African societies are interweaving their cultural traditions with new adaptations in the face of global pressures, influences, technologies, and trends.
