This course will consider the literature, art and film of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) in a cultural context. It will include representative works of literature by such writers as Lorca, Cela, Matute, Rivas, Martin Gaite, M. Hernandez, Delibes, Machado, Alberti, and others. The art of Picasso will be studied in the framework of the war, as will propaganda art, posters and music from the Nationalists and the Republicans. A variety of films concerning various aspects of the war years will be integrated into the course.
