Looks cross-culturally at communication embedded in particular cultures and imaginations; at code-switching, register, and other context-sensitive aspects of language use; at cultural categories and how they are employed in situations of uncertainty and in contests over meaning. Examines how speech shapes understanding of our humanity, our species' past, our relation to primates, and growth of our young.
