This course examines monuments that were or are currently politically significant and stand as national cultural symbols. We will study modification of the contextual meaning of specific monuments through their history as they are adapted to new governmental and national dictates. Monuments such as the World Trade Center, the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and war memorials such as the Shaw Memorial on Boston Common, Memorial Hall at Harvard University, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Vietnam War Monument and Saddam Hussein’s Monument in Baghdad will be covered.
