In this course, we will explore case the Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan as a case study that demonstrate the role of the earth sciences in addressing problems of public policy. Students will be introduced to the underlying scientific concepts relevant to the problem being addressed. After this scientific foundation is developed, we will discuss how it needs to be considered as part of the process of making policy decisions. The course will also introduce students to how scientists and public policy makers apply the concepts of probability and statistics in the decision making process using the EV Index.
