Fall 2006. DAVID GORDON. History of the Indian Ocean World from the perspective of the east African littoral, and in particular the Swahili islands of Zanzibar. Examines African engagement with the Indian Ocean World and the rise of African diasporas across the Middle East and South Asia. Begins prior to the Portuguese conquest; continues through Omani, British, and German colonialism, and the Zanzibar revolution of 1964; and culminates in the rise of independent Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, and Somalia.
