How do we make sense of the objects in our lives? This course will entail studio art production, discussions, presentations, and critiques, with a special focus on everyday objects in contemporary art practice. The projects will emphasize developing ideas and solving conceptual problems, while also serving as an introduction to particular materials and techniques such as cameraless photography, serial drawing, assemblage, and stop-motion video. Presentations and discussions will address historical and contemporary artists and approaches to art with objects, and will connect directly to the studio projects. Readings and films will also be part of the conceptual investigation of objects. The goal of this course is to provide a broad framework for art practice and to develop the skills needed to create educated and challenging art.
