Formal attention concerning the aesthetics of poetry is considered within their historical and intellectual contexts. Poets include Phillis Wheatley, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Robert Hayden, Gwendolyn Brooks, LeRoi Jones, Audre Lorde, Michael Harper, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Rita Dove.
