Note: Cross-listed with MUH 313. This course surveys important figures and significant issues, methods and theories in the historical development of enthnomusicology, and examines the ties between enthnomusicology and other disciplines, particularly musicology and anthropology. Students will explore approaches to enthnograpic fieldwork and musical transcription, and will acquire a set of terms and concepts used to describe and analyze music and music-making in non-Western traditional, classical and popular musical styles in their own social, cultural and historical contexts. Finally, students will consider the relations between local cultures and global systems, and assess the impact of Western music and modern technology on non-Western musics.
