A study of politics and music from earliest times through the twentieth century in all kinds of music--classical, folk, popular, jazz, and rock. It will cover the many roles of composers, performers, conductors, educators, scholars, and patrons, as well as amateur musicians and all who make music part of their daily lives. There will be an acquaintance with current scholarship regarding the interaction of music and politics and with revolutionary, messianic, and religious movements. Prerequisite: junior standing.
