This course examines the role women have played in the United States in the twentieth century. Migration and immigration, politics, labor (in and outside the home), economics, and race will be discussed, with particular attention paid to the construction of gender roles and its effect on the behavior and expectations of both men and women, as well as children. The transformation of the meaning of "feminism" over the course of the twentieth century will frame much of the course. Prerequisites: Second semester sophomores, or permission of instructor. Ir-3-
