This course is concerned with belief systems of African peoples and how spiritually derived values affect their ideas of history. It includes readings, lectures, and discussion on the belief systems (indigenous religious practices) and cosmologies (myths of origin) of selected groups, including oral traditions that reveal both spiritual values and perceptions of the distant past. Prerequisites: advanced class standing and a previous course in the area; or a general level of competence indicated by three previous courses in the social sciences and/or humanities. Fl-3-
