This course introduces students to the major artistic and cultural centers of Sub-Saharan Africa. It examines the artistic and cultural production of traditional and contemporary African arts through social-historical and post-colonial analyses. It will consider the relationships among African cultural practices and ideologies, European cultural practices and ideologies, the slave trade and colonialism.
