This course introduces students to some major women artists and to feminist debates within art history. The course identifies the institutions and processes that construct the gender of the artist: academic and avant-garde artistic training and collectives; the rise of national academies; the formation of the art historical canon; the hierarchy of subject matter and the media of art. It emphasizes the ways in which seeing and looking structure our understanding about masculinity, femininity and sexuality. Prerequisites: Eng 102 or permission of instructor. Ir-3-
