ART 361 - Art,Poetry, and Religion in Medieval Japan

Institution:
SUNY College at Oswego
Subject:
Description:
This course aims to outline the relationship between traditional Japanese arts and letters and their religious and philosophical background. The main emphasis is on showing the specific place of fine arts in the context of the Japanese spiritual culture, which was the unique blend of foreign beliefs (Buddhism, Taoism and Christianity) and an indigenous world-view, based on the Shinto faith. Lectures combine comparative analysis of poetry and visual arts seen against the backdrop of major religious tenets in order to demonstrate that the principal way of expression of religious feelings as well as religious dogmas in the traditional Japanese context was through artistic, poetic, theatrical and other forms of creative texts, rather than through philosophical or theological doctrines.
