Prerequisite: permission of chairperson. An approach to the picaresque, the pastoral novel and the essay with their concern with power and submission in everyday life. A study of the growing role of individual experience in fictional modes. Outcome: Students will recognize the confluence of different prose styles, and the creation of individual voices in fiction. They will also become familiar with emerging concerns with religious and scientific issues during the period.
