The course covers a range of topics: the rise and spread of Islam; the establishment and expansion of Islamic civilization; imperial state formation and governance; transformations of Islamic societies, cultures and legal traditions; intellectual currents and religious practice; colonialism and imperialism; the rise of nation-states; nationalism and other political ideologies; and cultural politics in the context of globalization.
