Description:

This course explores and compares, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the uses and politics of self in the creation of prose fiction in English. We will read and discuss both texts from "home countries' (e.g., the United States, Great Britain) and from postcolonial locations (e.g., South Africa, Chile) relying primarily on 20th Century sources. Among the areas of focus will be: autobiographical impulses and styles; language and gender; race relations and racial identity; and multiculturalism. [1/23/2006]
