The history of the Middle East focuses on Islamic societies in Arab and Berber states as well as Iran and Turkey. The role of Arab nationalism and Islam in its various forms will be examined in addition to the social, economic and geographic determinants of political behavior and institutions in the region. The role of the military and styles of leadership will be compared as well as some of the relationships between the states of the Middle East. [9/4/1996]
