Through the study of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Shirley, George Eliot's Mill on the Floss and Scenes of Clerical Life, and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and The Mayor of Casterbridge, the course considers how reality is constructed by each author and examines such social issues as class and gender.
